Der österreichische Innenminister Wolfgang Sobotka hat am 12. September 2016 im Rahmen einer Pressekonferenz zur Stichwahl der Wahl des österreichischen Bundespräsidenten bekannt gegeben, dass eine „einwandfreie und rechtskonforme Wahl“ aufgrund der Fehlerhaftigkeit der Briefwahlkuverts nicht wie geplant am 2. Oktober 2016 stattfinden kann. Die Briefwahl betrifft in erster Linie im Ausland lebende Österreicher/innen.
Der Innenminister entschuldigte sich bei den österreichischen Wählerinnen und Wählern und den beiden Wahlkandidaten für die notwendige Verschiebung.
 Das österreichische Parlament hat den Termin für die Wiederholung der Stichwahl zur Bundespräsidentenwahl auf den 4. Dezember.2016 gelegt.

The Austrian minister of the interior, Wolfgang Sobotka, has announced in a press conference on September 12th that due to faulty envelopes the repetition of the runoff to the Austrian presidential election cannot be carried out on October 2nd, 2016 as planned. The experts of the ministry of the interior had found that defect glue-stripes of the envelopes, designated to be used for postal elections, do not allow the run-off to be compliant to Austrian legal requirements. Postal elections mostly affect Austrians living abroad.
The minister of the interior apologized to all voters, and to the candidates, for the postponement of the run-off.
The Austrian Parliament set December 4th, 2016 as the date for the repetition of the runoff to the Austrian presidential elections.
